Brian Trappler, MD

Biography

Brian Trappler, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than four decades of clinical practice, academic teaching, and peer-reviewed research. He received his medical degree (MB, BCh) from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1974, and completed his internships in internal medicine and general surgery at Johannesburg General Hospital. He subsequently trained in cardiology as a Senior House Officer at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and served as Medical Registrar in the Cardiac ICU at Johannesburg General before entering psychiatry.

Dr. Trappler completed his psychiatry residency at the University of British Columbia and served as Chief Psychiatric Resident at Vancouver General Hospital. He was certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1981 and then completed a two-year Fellowship in Consultation Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He then spent six years as a Research Fellow in Medical Genetics under Dr. Jean Endicott at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and became American Board Certified in Psychiatry in 1989.

Dr. Trappler served on the SUNY Downstate faculty for more than thirty years, rising to Associate Professor in Clinical Psychiatry, and held directorships in undergraduate psychiatric education, inpatient teaching, and geriatric fellowship training. From 2002 to 2010 he was Director of Outpatient Clinical Services at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center. He has authored or co-authored over thirty peer-reviewed articles, beginning with work on the 1975 Johannesburg Marburg virus outbreak in the British Medical Journal, with additional published research spanning geriatric psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and medical education, and has written three books on psychological trauma. He has served as a manuscript referee for the Annals of Pharmacotherapy and the Journal of Traumatic Stress.
