At Amazing Botanicals we are continuing to add a plethora of beneficial and powerful ethnobotanicals, with the latest addition being Valerian Root Extract Tablets, which is one of the most potent herbs when it comes to relaxing and sedative effects.

Indeed, Valerian Root has been used for thousands of years to relieve stress, mitigate anxiety, and to combat insomnia. In-fact, Valerian’s history of use dates all the way back to Ancient Greece and Rome, with plenty of references to Valerian use occurring in Medieval times as well.

The pharmacology of Valerian is complex, since Valerian contains numerous alkaloids and other active compounds including Actinidine, Chatinine, Shyanthine, Valerianine, Valerine, Valerenic Acid, Isovaleric Acid, Hydroxyvalerenic Acid, Acetoxyvalerenic Acid, Hesperidin, 6-methylapigenin, and Linarin.

To make a long story short though, it is generally believed that most of Valerian Root’s effects are from Valerenic Acid, via Valerenic Acid inhibiting the breakdown of GABA in the brain.

Essentially, GABA is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in regulating the body’s nervous system, and it has been proven that low levels of GABA are linked to chronic stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

Since Valerenic Acid inhibits the breakdown of GABA in the brain, this causes levels of GABA to increase, leading to reduced stress and anxiety in addition to helping combat insomnia.

Indeed, there is scientific evidence that Valerian Root helps to reduce anxiety, including disorders related to anxiety such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Further, Valerian Root can be very sedating in high doses, and is therefore a perfect herbal ally for people who are having a hard time sleeping.

On a final note, based on my experience, people who are looking for anti-anxiety and relaxing effects but who do not want to go to sleep should take a low dose. In-fact, Valerian Root can even be energizing in low doses, since it gets rid of stress that would otherwise weigh people down. On the other hand, a high dose has far more sedative effects, and therefore a high dose of Valerian is proper before bedtime for people who are having a hard time going to sleep.
